6:50pm Update - Severe Thunderstorm Warning - 15 January 2025

UPDATE: 6:50pm: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 6:45 pm, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding was detected near Belconnen, Hall and Gungahlin. This thunderstorm is moving towards the southeast. It is forecast to affect Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Canberra Airport and South Canberra by 7:15 pm.

UPDATE: 6:20pm: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 6:15 pm, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds was detected near Burrinjuck Dam and Murrumbateman. This thunderstorm is moving towards the southeast. It is forecast to affect Hall and Gungahlin by 6:45 pm and Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Canberra Airport, South Canberra, Weston Creek and Woden Valley by 7:15 pm.

UPDATE: 5:45pm: The Bureau of Meteorology advises that severe thunderstorms in the warning area have temporarily eased. However, the redevelopment of severe thunderstorms remains possible. The situation is being closely monitored and further detailed warnings will be issued as necessary.

UPDATE: 5:05pm: Severe Thunderstorm Warning – Canberra for INTENSE RAINFALL, DAMAGING WINDS and LARGE HAILSTONES

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:55 pm, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce heavy, locally intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones was detected near Casuarina Sands and The Brindabella National Park. This thunderstorm is moving towards the southeast. It is forecast to affect Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong, Hall, Gungahlin, Canberra Airport, South Canberra, Weston Creek and Woden Valley by 5:25 pm.

UPDATE: 4:50pm: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:35 pm, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce heavy, locally intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding and damaging winds was detected near Mount Franklin in the Brindabellas and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. This thunderstorm is moving towards the east. It is forecast to affect Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Tuggeranong, Hall, Gungahlin, Canberra Airport, South Canberra, Weston Creek and Woden Valley by 5:05 pm and Queanbeyan by 5:35 pm.

UPDATE: 4:17pm: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:05 pm, severe thunderstorms likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Brindabella and Mount Franklin in the Brindabellas. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast. They are forecast to affect Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong, Hall, Gungahlin, Canberra Airport, South Canberra, Weston Creek and Woden Valley by 5:05 pm.

The ACT State Emergency Service warns of the risk of flash flooding in low lying areas within the next 60 minutes.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for damaging, locally destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall, for the whole of the ACT, including Canberra.

The ACT State Emergency Service advises the community to:

-Move your car under cover and away from trees;

-Secure or put away loose items;

-Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines;

-Stay indoors away from windows;

-Never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.
